UniWeb

UniWeb is a platform created as a part of intelliWeb, specifically developed to improve the management of the University of Granada websites.

severalUniWeb

The previous UniWeb version, 1.0, was conceived to work in environments with no databases but with a high load of requests. This version has been released and is now available on forja:UniWeb. The 2.0 version is, for the time being, strictly commercial software.

intelliWeb is the ideal platform for corporative sites - multiplatform - since it allows the user to locate different websites - with different characteristics, users... - in it, and to keep them integrated at the same time.

UniWeb maintains all the UGR offices', departments', schools', and other centres' websites, as well as the main site of the University and every other specific UGR web element (for instance, a portal to attract more students and for current students).

All websites integrated into an UniWeb platform share part of their information even in case they are hosted by different servers. UniWeb enables to distribute the load between different servers, so as to cover any corporative demands.

Uniweb users can create totally different websites that do not even look similar, but they can also integrate this particular image with the image of the University. This way, a common image is kept while the different bodies of the University are provided with personality.

Uniweb integrates all these sites' information: the user can establish a common browser to all corporative sites, share data about faculties, studies, departments, etc. In this sense, any change occurred in any body will be immediately spread to the others.

UniWeb also includes syllabus management packages, faculty records, diagrams and other needs for any particular web. At the same time, UniWeb has all the intelliWeb tools, such as contact forms.

Finally, UniWeb enables shared management of the web sites: whoever is responsible for a part can manage and update this part of information, not having access to the rest of it. Besides, UniWeb enables the users to have private zones. This option, for instance, enables the members of a department executive board to share documents and amog them using web tools.

Successful Implementations

intelliWeb has been succesfully used in many scenes. Uniweb, as a development based on intelliWeb, has implementd in different environments, and proved the great capacities of the product.

The University of Granada has changed its main website location (and also of the main websites of all vice-rectorships and main services) to the intelliWeb system. Many departments and centres related to this institution are changing its website system location too. Their systems are configured on a package called UniWeb. It includes units that have been modified for the needs of the University.

Nowadays, over 25 platforms (websites) of the UGR are included in this system. Each of them has its own characteristics, modifications and layouts, but they can all share information, establish automatic links to each other... Many offices, departments and entities related to the UGR are joining the UniWeb system to enjoy all these advantages.

The UniWeb system consists on a 5 linux server farm that share a database system (MySQL with a parallel access back-up, a master and 4 slaves) and the web servers (Apache + PHP5). These servers equally share the load of all platforms executed on them. However, some of these platforms are executed on independent servers that share the database with the main farm or execute their own database server.

intelliWeb system is easy to use for a non-specialized user, and it allows to work in a distributed way and share information by either establishing a main database for all platforms or establishing different databases.
